John Michael Driving School

Frequently asked questions

Will other pupils be in the car with me?

NO! Unlike many schools, all our lessons are conducted on a one to one basis and you will not be sharing your lessons with other pupils.

How many lessons will I need?

There are many factors that determine how many lessons you will end up needing. Age, gender, attitude, personality and the ability to practise when not in lessons all contribute.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) which conducts the UK driving test recommends an average of 45 hours with about 22 hours of private practice.

Once you have had a few lessons, we will be better able to judge this for you.

Do you use qualified instructor's?

Yes. In order to conduct driving lessons on a professional basis, all instructors must be registered with the DSA (Driving standards agency)

Some schools use 'PDI's (practising driving instructors). These are registered instructors but who have not yet passed the final part of their instructors test. These will display a pink triangular sticker in the car window.

We only use fully qualified instructor's (ADI'S) and as such, display a green, hexagonal sticker in the car.

Can I have more than 1 lesson a week?

Of course you can. The less time between lessons will help you learn quicker as you will need to spend less time acclimatising yourself to the car each time. Please call to discuss availability.

Can I have lessons more than 1 hour long?

Yes, many pupils find it beneficial to have longer lessons and, depending upon available time slots, 1.5 and 2 hour lessons can be arranged.

How will I know I'm ready to take my test?

We will keep track of your progress and discuss this with you as appropriate. We will let you know when we feel you are ready to start thinking about booking a test.

I'm really really nervous, not normal nervous either!

Don't worry about it, We are used to nervous students. We have the most friendly driving instructor's going! We will go out of our way to make you feel comfortable, and you can always get out the car for fresh air if you need it!

What if i need the toilet on a driving lesson?

We will drive you to the closest one, no need to worry.

What do i need to bring on my 1st lesson?

All you need is your provisional license and payment for the lessons/package you booked.

What will happen on my 1st lesson?

We will pick you up from your agreed pick up point. Take you somewhere suitable to carry out some basics. Depending on your address this could be a industrial estate or a car park etc. We will get you in the drivers seat and get you moving!

How much do the Theory & Practical tests cost?

The DSA charge £25.00 for a Theory test & £62.00 for a Practical Test.

Some schools offer a guaranteed pass, what is this?

No respectable driving school will offer a guaranteed pass as it is just not possible. The driving examiner is the only person who can pass the pupil. Something that sounds too good to be true normally is. However our aim is to get you passed 1st time!

Will i be sitting at the side of the road a lot?

No way! We keep you moving, we might have to stop to discuss something or explain something but we keep you moving and you will be driving for your full lesson!

What will happen if i pay online?

When you pay online you will be asked to share your phone number with John Michael Driving School, Please tick the box to say YES. Once your payment has gone through one of our instructors will be in touch to arrange a suitable time and place to start your lessons.

I've looked on your map and i'm just out your area, Can i still have lessons with you?
